EXPERT TIP:
PowerPoint 2010

Working with complex slides containing multiple objects just got easier with the Selection Pane in PowerPoint 2010! The Selection Pane lists every object on the current slide. Simply click on the item name to select the object in the slide. This is extremely useful when working with layered objects. Unsure if you like an object? Click on the “eye” next to the item to hide it without committing to actually deleting it. To access this great new tool, from Home|Editing, click the Select button and choose Selection Pane.

A Spring in their Step
Baker and Daniels’ “Lessons Learned in Social Media”
by Tami Schiller

Traveling Coaches is always on the lookout for great stories about how law firms are leveraging technology and innovation to make learning more effective for their user community. Lida Pinkham, IT Trainer at Baker and Daniels, recently captured our attention through a tweet from an ASTD presentation regarding social media, so we had to find out more about Lida's online and real-life communities.

I read about your presentation at the ASTD Chapter Leaders Conference in October. How long have you been a member of ASTD?

I have been a member of ASTD for 2 years and a member of my local chapter here in Indianapolis for 3 years. During my first year as a member of CIASTD, I participated as a part of the membership committee. This was a great way to meet new members and get involved. When a call went out to fill a new board position as VP of Technology, I decided to apply. I wanted to share my knowledge and experience using technology to network and engage groups of people. I have been doing this for many years even before the phrase “social media” was coined. It wasn’t long before I determined getting the chapter more involved in Social Media was going to be the priority during my term as a board member.

The blog post says your innovative approach introducing Twitter during your social media presentation was so successful that some attendees actually created accounts and tweeted during the session. How did you accomplish such an amazing feat?

I created a Twitter simulation using an 11” X 17” piece of paper. Basically, they created a profile, followed other people, tweeted, retweeted and replied to tweets all using the piece of paper. For each exercise, they passed their twitter page around the table so others could respond and interact. It was so much fun and the room was abuzz with conversations centered around twitter that our 20-minute introductory activity turned into an hour.

We lead our industry by fostering an environment where energy and creativity are encouraged. We look forward rather than backward, always crafting better solutions for our clients.

Traveling Coaches understands that garnering the interest of busy professionals for training isn’t always easy. We provide attention-grabbing technology commercials with eye-catching visuals and catchy music. These commercials are a perfect way to announce upcoming software rollouts, upgrades and changes that will affect your users. With an average running time of around one minute, the commercials are able to provide a quick and easy way to pique users’ interest effectively. By focusing on key productivity points and helpful new features, users will begin to get excited about training and how they can best benefit from impending changes. Our technology commercials can be distributed through the web browser, accessed through your company’s intranet or even embedded into a PowerPoint presentation providing you the flexibility to decide the method that works best for your organization.
